Congratulations to Brad Koivisto of Cromwell, who recently won the first Brainerd $10K Bracket National at the Brainerd International Raceway. This big payout attracted nearly 200 amateur racers and Brad outlasted them all. He raced his 1974 Chevelle GTO and usually races in the BIR’s stock/super stock class. Brad said he considered himself a longshot to win and was there to support the track and enjoy the weekend. But he soon found himself in the winner’s circle. After getting into the fifth and sixths rounds he figured he just might have a chance to win it all and he did just that. He also said that it was definitely a team effort and he had a great team.
Friends and family are invited to attend the burial of Tom Gresczyk on Sept. 7, Labor Day, at 1 p.m. at the Catholic cemetery just north of the tracks in Wright. Safety will be observed, so wear a mask, and try to stay 6 feet apart.
Our sympathy to the family of Dan VonDeLinde, Judy’s cousin, who recently passed away.
Cromwell Wright School classes begin in person Sept. 8.
Congratulations to Erv and Lola Pettit as they celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary at the VFW in Cloquet on 1-4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 29 with an open house. Cards of congratulations can be sent to them at 39 Ninth St., Cloquet MN 55720.
Due to the coronavirus, the 101st Farmers Co-op annual meeting was not held this month. The board of directors did meet on its regular meeting date of Aug. 18 to discuss the financial condition and make decisions at the store. There will be copies of last year’s annual meeting minutes and the yearly financial report available at the store for those who are interested.
Store manager Tim Bury was able to secure a pandemic loan, which he was able to use to pay the employees an extra $2 an hour for eight weeks, but now the loan money is used up so those increases have been reduced again. Some or all of the loan may be forgiven, so this was a big help to the bottom line at the store.
The board also had a discussion on a recent burglary and how to claim losses. Some stolen items were recovered, but some cannot be used since they were opened or ruined. Tim turned in several pages of claims to the insurance company and added the damage to the doors, as we are a victim. The two offenders will be put into a program and probably not serve any jail time. The claims will take a while to process.
Tim is looking into buying a new scanner-scale costing $1,200 to $2,800. He will do more investigation for a best offer. Chassandra Ward was hired as a short-term 20-hour-a-week clerk and will be paid through a workforce program at no cost to the store.
Meetings take place on the third Tuesday of the month, but the September meeting has been moved to the 22nd. Remember, all meetings are open to the public. They start at 6 p.m.
Ruby’s Pantry will be open Sept. 10. No boxes or bags needed. Volunteers will fill boxes and bring them right to your vehicle. Volunteers are always needed too.
