Carlton happenings

As we all know, school has started, but it wasn’t like the first day of school that I remember.

As a child, I looked forward to wearing the new outfit and shoes that I got to start the school year. It was exciting to see classmates that I hadn’t seen all summer, since my family lived in the country.

This year, kids who start school in person are wearing masks, using hand sanitizer and washing their hands many times a day, and maintaining 6 feet between desks. The teacher who greets each student will have to verbally express their excitement as the child enters the classroom because they will be wearing a mask that covers smiles. Other students will not leave their homes, but will begin the new school year on the computer with virtual learning. Good luck to all of the students going back to elementary, middle and high school and college. Have a great year.

School isn’t the only thing going on in Carlton this month.

The Carlton VFW will hold its fourth annual garage sale this weekend, Sept 11-12, at the Four Season Complex in Carlton. Your donations are needed to help make the garage sale a success. Please clean out your garages and attics soon to donate those unwanted items, and support the veterans in our community. Clean garage sale items (no clothing and shoes) can be donated by contacting Linda Kaehler at 218-428-0496. All proceeds go to the Carlton VFW.

Enjoy delicious food for a good cause at Harold’s Fiasco Hog Roast from 1-5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 12 at the VFW. Cost: $6.

The J.M. Paine Presbyterian Church in Carlton and the First Presbyterian Church in Wrenshall have consolidated to form the River’s Edge Church located in Carlton on Chestnut Avenue.

Due to the pandemic and restrictions on gathering, the Carlton Chicken Swap scheduled for Sept. 26 has been canceled.
