A woman died Saturday from injuries suffered in a crash between a side-by-side ATV in which she was a passenger and a car.
According to a press release from the Carlton County Sheriff’s Office, a 911 call came in at 3:16 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 5, reporting the crash on the Soo Trail east of Moose Lake.
A side-by-side-style ATV was travelling on the Soo Trail and collided with a car at a trail and driveway intersection near the 4100 block of County Road 8.
The 31-year-old female passenger in the ATV was transported to Essentia Moose Lake Hospital and later flown to a Duluth area hospital where she died. The remaining occupants of the ATV and car did not report any injuries.
According to Chief Deputy Brian Belich, the woman was not wearing a helmet. While state law requires anyone under 18 to wear a helmet, it is not required of adults.
Sheriff’s deputies, along with the Moose Lake Police Department, Minnesota DNR and Emergency Medical Services from the Moose Lake Fire, Essentia Moose Lake Ambulance and Life Link Helicopter responded to the scene.
The crash remains under investigation by the Carlton County Sheriff’s Office and the Midwest Medical Examiner’s Office.
