The Cloquet-Esko-Carlton girls tennis team traveled to Superior to take on the Spartans on Monday, and the Lumberjacks came away with an impressive 6-1 win.
Marina Dostal got things started for CEC at No. 1 singles by downing Superior’s Jillian Reville 4-6, 6-4 and 6-0. CEC added a win at No. 3 singles when Addie Loeb defeated Brooke Herdry 6-2, 6-2. Lydia Stone of CEC also notched a win at No. 4 singles when she beat Callie Holmlund 6-2, 6-2.
“The girls are playing well in this shortened match season,” said head coach Derek Johnson. “We faced some tough teams early and our girls battled hard in each of those matches.”
After winning three of four singles matches, the Lumberjacks turned their attention to doubles play where they swept the Spartans. Kylie McKeon and Carlee Maslowski of CEC won 1-6, 6-2 and 10-8 over Sydney DeMeyer and Maya Sickler at No. 1 doubles. The CEC No. 2 doubles team of Brynn Martin and Jayden Karppinen downed Clara Lundholm and Emma Lundholm 6-3 and 6-4. CEC completed the sweep when Bella Harriman and Camden Pollard downed Tatum Williams and Mollie Rossing at No. 3 doubles.
“The remaining matches will be good, close, quality matches for us,” said Johnson. “Halfway through the season the players kind of know where they fit into the lineup and now we are building more chemistry with their doubles partners and being more patient and smarter when it comes to our singles strategy.”
The Lumberjacks will play Superior again, this time at home, at 4:15 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 22.
