Girls bounce back

After suffering a 6-1 loss at the hands of Grand Rapids-Greenway on Monday, the Cloquet-Esko-Carlton girls tennis team rallied for a solid home win against Superior on Tuesday.

Against GRG the lone CEC win came at No. 3 singles when Addie Loeb rallied from a set down to beat Emily Hill 2-6, 6-3, 6-3.

Despite losing the rest of the matches, the Lumberjacks nearly won four other matches including Lydia Stone at No. 4 singles to Abby Gustafson 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 and CEC's No. 1 doubles team of Kylie McKeon and Brynn Martin dropping a 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 decision to the team of Jordan Troumbly and Courtney Brandt. The CEC No. 2 doubles team of Carlee Maslowski and Jayden Karppinen fell 7-5, 4-6, and 7-5 in their match and the CEC No. 3 doubles team of Camden Pollard and Bella Harriman dropped a tough 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 decision.

The Lumberjacks took three-of-four singles matches on Tuesday against Superior to walk away with a 4-3 victory.

The victory march in singles started at No. 2 singles when Winnie Benjamin defeated Anna Downs 6-1, 6-1 and continued at No. 3 singles when Addie Loeb downed Brooke Hendry 6-3, 6-0. The 'Jacks wrapped up their singles wins when Lydia Stone took down Emily Asp 6-1, 6-1. The lone singles loss came at No. 1 singles when Marina Dostal fell to Jillian Beville 6-7 (7-3), 6-1, 14-12.

"Our singles players all played well," said coach Derek Johnson. "Marina (Dostal) lost in a third set super tie breaker but every game was close with long rallies and honestly our number 2, 3 and 4 singles players played smart tennis today. They didn't give away easy points by double faulting."

CEC also managed a win in doubles play. At No. 1 doubles, the CEC team of Kylie McKeon and Carlee Maslowski won 6-3, 6-3.

"Kylie (McKeon), our senior captain, stepped up at No. 1 doubles with Carlee and got our lone doubles win," said Johnson. "In our previous match, they looked a little flat and I told her to get her energy level up in this match by just having fun and that's exactly what she did at doubles last night."
