Wright/Cromwell news

The 2021 Carlton County Historical Society’s barn calendars are available at the Pine Knot News office in Cloquet, Widdes Farm and Feed in Esko, and TJ’s in Mahtowa. You can also call Barb Dahl at 218-355-8644 or 644-3691. Calendars are $10 each.

Three of this year’s featured barns are Mark Groth’s barn, the Samuelson barn and the Mattila brothers’ barn (now owned by Robert and Darci Dahl). I’m not sure, but I’m pretty sure that the late Carl Hanson built two of these barns back in the day. Carl was a master carpenter and specialized in barn raisings.

The administrators at the Cardinal Court and Villa Vista have announced that they are making arrangements for visitors at the facility. They have ordered an ultraviolet light for use in sterilizing rooms between visits. Visitors must call to make appointments. Staff will continue screening and they will be tested at random with a new test that gives nearly immediate results.

There will be an auction sale at Alice Lake’s home at 1353 Award Boulevard in Wright, Saturday at 11 a.m.

Alice and Dick would say a huge “thank you” to all the folks who have sent them cards and letters since they moved to Cardinal Court. They have heard from so many of you and are overwhelmed by the friendly greetings they have received. Keep the correspondence coming and to others who would enjoy receiving mail.

Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Wright opened Oct. 4 for those who felt safe in attending. There have been several changes made in the sanctuary, so you should feel safe attending. There is a new pulpit and altar, made by Bryce Pinnow, so come and check it out any Sunday. All the safety protocols are being followed, but if you don’t feel safe attending, you can watch services posted on Facebook.

Yoga meets at the Cromwell Park Pavilion 11 a.m.-12 p.m. Mondays. Wear a mask upon arriving.

The Area Clothing Depot in Cromwell is now accepting donations. Volunteers are welcome. Call Beanie Randa at 219-966-4228.

Bob Hanson is still in North Shore Estates for rest, therapy and, hopefully, recuperation. His address is 7700 Grand Ave., Room 128, Duluth MN 55807. I’m sure he would enjoy getting cards and letters.

There was a full moon Oct. 1, and there will be another full moon, or blue moon, Oct. 31. Since it’s unusual for two full moons to appear in a calendar month, “once in a blue moon” has come to describe events that happen so seldom.

Bethany Church is sponsoring a “Trick or Trunk” event in the church parking lot this year, instead of the big Chilloween party at the pavilion in Cromwell. This will be a drive-by with social distancing, from 3 to 5 p.m. Oct. 31. Donations of candy, 8-oz. bottles of water, individual bags of chips, juice boxes and other items are needed. Just drop them off at the church by Oct. 25.

Our sincere sympathy to the family and friends of Bob Howard, 73, who passed away at his home Sept. 30 with his family by his side. Bob and his wife Sandy had lived on Tamarack Lake since his retirement from Jamar in 2006. He will truly be missed. He will be laid to rest Oct. 9 at the new Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery in Duluth, with a reception and lunch at the AAD Shrine Meeting and Event Center to follow.

That’s all the news from the Edge of Wright.
