The City of Wrenshall is running a wellness challenge in an effort to get community members outside and moving. The idea was conceived in a brainstorming session with the new parks/community committee. Outgoing mayor Donna Mae Weiderman reports that the response has been positive.
"It really is a way for people to get outside while social distancing yet still feel connected as a community."
Pandemic restrictions have a definite impact on physical activity.
Wrenshall community members responded to a survey about the coronavirus and 27 said restrictions and precautions were affecting the ability to be physically active. Some said they have more time for at-home practices and even go to the gym because their alternative activities are limited by reduced hours and closures.
A higher number of community members reported that they are physically active less frequently due to having to cancel gym memberships and spending a greater amount of time on childcare. Some are feeling more tired at the end of a long day working from home.
Several people reported feeling isolated and lonely due to social restrictions, including Wrenshall senior Anne Mattson.
"It's made seeing friends and family so difficult," she said. "Especially seeing my grandparents. We used to spend every weekend over at their house and we were able to visit most of the summer, but winter is going to be much harder."
With case numbers rising precipitously in Minnesota, the winter might be a time of struggle for many, both for staying active and feeling isolated.
It's a well-established fact that physical activity and mental health are correlated. According to the Mayo Clinic, "The links between depression, anxiety and exercise aren't entirely clear - but working out and other forms of physical activity can definitely ease symptoms of depression or anxiety and make you feel better." With Coronavirus slated to surge in the coming weeks and perhaps months, it is more important than ever to focus on our physical and mental wellbeing.
Wrenshall's Wellness Challenge is a way to track healthy habits while engaging with the community in a safe, socially distanced way. The challenge requires participants to track 20 minutes of active movement three days a week. If you would like to be a part of the Wrenshall
Wellness Challenge for the month of December, you may pick up a form at the Wrenshall General Store, City Hall, or download the PDF version from the Wrenshall city hall's website.
Whether you participate in the Wrenshall Wellness Challenge or not, make sure to get outside in the sunlight, move your body, and stay connected from a distance.
