A hometown newspaper with a local office, local owners & lots of local news
We are saddened to hear of the death of our dear friend Elaine Rose Huhta, 86, longtime Cromwell resident. She passed away Nov. 13, the 64th birthday of her only child, Kevin Hamre. She taught in a one-room schoolhouse in Mora before spending the rest of her career as a second-grade teacher for Cromwell-Wright Schools.
Please direct memorials to Lakes and Pines Community Action Council (1700 Maple Ave. E., Mora MN 55051) or to the Cromwell-Wright Dollars for Scholars fund in her name (5624 Hwy 21, P.O. Box 7, Cromwell MN 55726). Elaine’s family plans to have a public celebration of her life in Cromwell at a future date.
Our sympathy to the family of Donna Mae Rengo, who died Oct. 31. Donna graduated from Cromwell High School 1954. Interment will be at Fort Snelling National Cemetery. A celebration of Donna’s life will be held at a later date.
Our sympathy to the family and friends of Elaine Marie (Maki) Marsyla, 75, of Tamarack, who passed away peacefully in her sleep Nov. 14. Elaine spent most of her working years as a para/aid extraordinaire at the McGregor School, and was also a volunteer for McGregor Ambulance. A service will be planned for when more people can gather together to celebrate her life.
Mayor Sharon Zelazny sent me an update on the City of Cromwell happenings. She tells me the city has been consumed with Covid-related work. Besides putting in place mandated pandemic plans for the city and the Municipal Liquor Store, there is the constant monitoring of keeping people in our community safe. New is that the ice rink warming house cannot be open this winter. The council won’t be implementing a tax increase this year in an effort to help property owners during this difficult year.
The city is busy preparing for the Hwy 210 project scheduled for next summer, 2021. Along with the project there will be some updated utilities and roads. Although there will always be at least one lane of traffic on Hwy 210 during construction, Hwy 73 will need to be detoured. The state has notified residents along the detour route, plus the detour will be extensively advertised prior to construction beginning.
Yoga meets 11 a.m.-12 p.m. Mondays at the Cromwell Park Pavilion. Wear a mask upon arriving and leaving, and take your yoga gear with you.
Ruby’s Pantry will be at the Cromwell Park Pavilion 9:30-11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 10. No boxes or bags needed. Volunteers will fill boxes and bags and bring them right to your vehicle.
Don’t forget that donations for the Christmas Caring program are always appreciated. Donation containers are placed around Cromwell and Wright in area businesses and also at the Clothing Depot. Stop in on Thursdays to visit with Pam and Ruth, who are sponsoring this fundraiser. Through generous donations, more than 100 kids and youth will have a much happier Christmas this year.
Students at the Cromwell-Wright School will be dismissed every day at 2:30 pm until further notice.
There is an opening on the Farmers Co-op’s board of directors. Contact Tim Bury or any board member for information. The board meets the third Tuesday of the month at 6 p.m. at the store. The current co-op board members are George Uecker, Jennie Hanson, Beanie Randa and Scott Ferry.
That’s all the news from the Edge of Wright. Stay safe and please wear a face covering when in public. Special thanks to all the area educators for their extraordinary dedication to our students. Remember, teachers don’t teach for
the income — teachers teach for the outcome.
