The women’s basketball team from the University of Minnesota Duluth stepped off the court to help with a good cause last weekend. The team assisted in collecting toys for the Duluth Salvation Army on Dec. 5. Players said it is important to them to support the community who has also supported them during this very difficult year. Taya Hakamaki, of Cromwell, was one of the women who were interviewed for a television news story. She’s a part of the team with cousin Shaily Hakamaki.
Taya said it was great to be able to give back to the community and it was amazing how many people showed up with donations. They filled the back of a coach’s van with 232 toys, 83 gloves and mittens, and 66 new hats, among other donations.
Please consider sending a holiday card or gift to a resident at the Villa Vista/Cardinal Court. The address is 1220 Villa Ct. Dr. Cromwell, MN 55726. I’m sure it would be OK to drop off gifts in the front entrance if you call 644-3331 to let an employee know you are doing this. They will make sure the gifts are delivered.
This seems to be the time of year where there are more and more scams taking place. You can call the AARP Fraud Network at 877-908-3360 to check on legitimate requests, or go to the Senior Linkage Line at 800-333-2433 if you have questions on any possible scams. Don’t fall for those phone calls from fake grandkids, the IRS, Social Security, or other callers as they are scams. And never send money or give out personal information unless you made an inquiry yourself.
There will be no customer appreciation event at the Area Clothing Depot this year but they really do appreciate customers. That’s why they are having a special three-day sale that ends Dec. 12. There will be a special price of $3 a bag for items that are not specially marked. Masks and social distancing are required to enter.
I got a nice letter informing me and anyone interested or those who have family members buried in the Forest Hill Cemetery to try to donate to the Cromwell Forest Hill Cemetery Association to help defray the three-year shortfall of an average of $2,200 per year. So, if you can help out financially, please send your donations to Tina Johnson, 5140 Co. Rd 4, Cromwell, MN 55726. Checks can be made out to: Cromwell Forest Hill Cemetery Association.
It’s the last chance to give donations to the Christmas Caring Program. Donation containers are placed around Cromwell and Wright in area businesses and also at the Clothing Depot. Stop in on Thursdays to visit with Pam (357-2042) and Ruth, who are sponsoring the fundraiser. Gifts of toys can be dropped off at Bethany Lutheran Church any time.
The Wright Seniors or the Cromwell Area Young Old Timers will not be meeting until further notice.
Former exchange student Sonet from Bangladesh turned 30 this week. He lived with us back in 2007 and 2008. It’s hard to believe it’s been that long since he was here. He keeps in touch with us online, so it is always great to hear that he is doing well. They have lots of Covid-19, but there are no restrictions to the public. It’s up to each individual on how they cope with the pandemic. If they get the virus, they are mostly on their own, since their country doesn’t have the medical capacity to help.
That’s all the news from the Edge of Wright. Stay safe and please wear a face covering when in public. And remember the three Ws: Wash your hands, wear a mask, and watch your distance.
