Our country is going through a trial that may redefine who we are as a nation. I feel our democracy is struggling by the hands of those who want to change our Constitutional freedoms founded and guided under God.
World War II and Hitler’s Nazi antisemitism allowed many to turn their heads when certain groups were targeted, faith banned, employment denied, books burned, and the list goes on and on. Martin Niemoller, a German theologian and Lutheran pastor, reminds us of how quickly we can have these removed from those in power. His poem: “First they came” goes something like this: “First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out — because I was not a socialist. Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out — because I was not a trade unionist. Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out — because I was not a Jew. Then they came for me — and there was no one left to speak out for me” does reflect what is currently happening in our country.
We all need to speak out against our radical ideology. I believe we are a nation under God and counterculture is a movement of deceit.
