After selecting “The Nickel Boys” by Colson Whitehead as the 2021 One Book Northland title, the Cloquet Public Library is hosting three events this month.
For younger readers (and the young at heart), the library will host a “story stroll” through Cloquet’s Veterans Park 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Saturday, April 10. Take a walk through Veterans Park in Cloquet and read “Last Stop on Market Street” by Matt de la Peña as you go. “Last Stop on Market Street” is a heartwarming picture book with themes of building community, intergenerational friendship, finding beauty and appreciation in unlikely things, and helping the less fortunate. The book also touches on the topic of inequality. There will also be brochures available with information about having discussions with children about the book’s themes. Visit Cloquet Public Library’s website (cloquetlibrary.org) for a read-aloud video with the author and resources for discussing the book’s themes with children.
On Thursday, April 15, readers are invited to the Cloquet Public Library for 4-5:30 p.m. discussion of “The Nickel Boys,” which tells the story of two boys unjustly sentenced to a Florida reform school during the Jim Crow era. The novel is based on the real story of a reform school that operated for 111 years and warped the lives of thousands of children. Registration is required.
Finally, there will be a movie with a justice and equality theme 4-7 p.m. Thursday, April 29. Call the library or stop in to see the title. There will be an opportunity afterward to explore the movie’s themes and how they are connected to today’s world. Registration is required.
