Calendar is filling up fast

Wrenshall's August event calendar is filling up fast, so I want to take a moment to make sure everyone has a preview of the upcoming activities in your neighborhood!

The month kicks off with Brickyard Days, Aug. 6 and 7. A community picnic will open the festivities 5-7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 6, in the city hall parking lot. On Saturday, Aug. 7, there will be a 5k run, and the traditional celebratory parade starts at 10 a.m. This year the parade will feature the first of what will be an annual motorcycle ride and show. In the evening, Bricks Pub will showcase music, with plenty of space for catching up with friends old and new. If you want to volunteer to help, or need more information, contact Brickyard Days coordinator Wendy Nyberg.

On Sunday, Aug. 15, Historic Scott House proprietor James Sheetz will present a night of music in tribute to Carole King. The artist wrote her first hit song at age 17, and is still creating and performing. Sheetz will bring the energy and insight of King's music to his open field for folks to enjoy from the comfort of their picnic blankets.

That same week, on Tuesday, Aug. 17, Lyric Opera of the North presents its Summer Sparkler concert on the grounds of the Historic Scott House. This year's program features music that was written in or inspired by faraway places. Check loonopera.org for ticket information.

The music will continue with a free Music in the Park concert 6-8 p.m. Aug. 18 in Wrenshall's Hugh Line Park.

The week rounds out with the Free Range Film Festival Aug. 20 and 21. This year's lineup is weighted toward animal and pet movies. There is a pet turtle documentary, a cartoon about a wild-game hunt gone wrong, and a full-length feature, "We Don't Deserve Dogs," which rather says it all. There are also a number of Minnesota filmmakers in the program, including Rachel Prost, whose special short "Browsing History" looks at her father's video rental business through the early days of the pandemic. Magnolia Café of Carlton will be onsite with its food truck, and the neighboring Food Farm will offer open-house farm tours 3-5 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 21.

I'm looking forward to seeing folks and relishing the summer of events we have in our backyard.
