Summer school deemed a success

The Esko School Board approved pay hikes for noncontract substitute workers during its July 12 meeting, citing a need to not only attract new substitutes but also to show appreciation for the current roster of substitutes.

The rates for substitute teachers did not change, and will remain at $120 per day or $60 per half-day. But substitute paraprofessionals, food service, and custodian workers and program assistants all will receive $12 per hour, a raise of 50 cents per hour. Superintendent Aaron Fischer had recommended a raise of 25 cents, but also told the board it has been difficult to find subs. “It’s unlikely an extra quarter will matter much to the loyal group of subs, but it does show our appreciation,” he said. After some discussion, the board agreed to raise the rates 50 cents per hour.

High school principal Greg Hexum reported on the success of the summer school program.

“We started with 58 semester failures, and we’ve resolved 56 of them; everyone except one (who had medical issues) will start the fall up to speed with their peers,” Hexum told the board. He considers the summer program a tremendous success.

Also Monday, Fischer asked the board to approve a 10-year facilities plan in order to stay in compliance with state funding requirements.

“I know we are starting a new 10-year facilities project this fall, so approving tonight’s plan may seem redundant. But it’s more of a formality, and when we have completed our 10-year facilities project, the board can substitute the new plan at that time,” he said. The measure passed.

The board also approved several hires for the 2021-2022 school year, including a paraprofessional, Dennis Rengo, who is board member Todd Rengo’s brother. Todd Rengo abstained from the vote.
