Opera comes to the country

The opera is coming to the shores of Lac La Belle Tuesday, Aug. 17. The Lyric Opera of the North, or LOON, as it is lovingly called, will be presenting its Summer Sparkler event in person on the grounds of the Historic Scott House.

When the artists take the stage, it will have been 585 days since the company performed in front of a live audience, and artistic director Sarah Lawrence admits, “I’ve had lots of tears. To be singing again, and doing it collaboratively with other people, it just feels really emotional.”

“At least 10 different countries will be represented in this program — there will be a visit to a French café, a folk song from Taiwan, and a Swedish duet.” When I asked what inspired the set list, Lawrence said that for many folks, travel hasn’t been an option and this was an opportunity to satisfy our global wanderlust, all from the comfort of a safe outdoor space in Wrenshall.

She said she curated a list of performers who could showcase the culturally diverse talents of our region.

The menu for the evening will reflect the global theme as well. Jonathan Reznick of MidCoast Catering and the Rambler food truck is putting together $15 picnic supper boxes featuring food inspired by the cuisines of Spain, Italy, France, and Norway. Food orders need to be placed by 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 14.

Transportation by bus from three departure points in Duluth will be provided.

“Performing is a collaborative sport,” Lawrence said. “I love doing these things with other people.”

The grounds open at 5:30 and the performance begins at 6:30. Tickets for the show are $20 for adults and $12 for students. Since there are no tents, a rain date is set for the next day, Wednesday, Aug. 18. For more details and to purchase tickets, visit loonopera.org.
