The Carlton County Fair is this weekend and I am still looking for volunteers to work at the Little Red School through Aug. 22. Call me at 218-357-2385 if you can spare a couple of hours volunteering.
Stop by the Pine Knot News exhibit at the fair, Aug. 19-22. Ann Markusen and Jennie Hanson are regular contributors to the weekly editions. Pick up a free copy of the paper and consider subscribing.
Reino "Ray" Walli, 91, the youngest of Jacob and Sophia Walli's 12 children, passed away on Aug. 5. Ray was raised on the family dairy farm. He graduated from Cromwell High School in 1949. In 1951 he married Dianne Milner with whom he had three children. Ray was proud to have served in the Marine Corps during the Korean War. In the early 1980s, Ray moved to find work in the steel fabricating business. He moved first to Denver and then northern Virginia, where he met his wife, Donna, with whom he enjoyed 32 years of marriage. Retirement found him spending at least a month back home at Pike Lake and Wright.
The 102nd yearly meeting of the Farmers Co-op Store was held on Aug. 11 at the Wright Senior Center. There was a lengthy discussion on the possible options for the store's future. The general consensus is to try to keep the store going the best we can and make further decisions when manager Tim Bury retires in a few years.
The board of directors will look into options and is asking for suggestions from shareholders, some who emphasized that the community needs to support the store by patronizing it as much as possible.
There were two openings on the board. Incumbents Scott Ferry and Carol Hutar were nominated as was Doreen Warner. Doreen and Carol were elected.
The meeting adjourned and food was served by the Wright Senior Club. Everyone sang "Happy Birthday" to Ray Gurske, as it was his 95th birthday.
Yoga at the Cromwell Pavilion resumed this week and will continue on Aug. 23 and Aug. 30.
The Cromwell Community Blood Drive will take place noon to 6 p.m. Monday, Aug. 23 at the pavilion. Donors are needed, so contact Wanda at 218-644-3542 to register.
The next YOT Senior Dance takes place 1-4 p.m. Aug. 26 at the Cromwell Park Pavilion. There were over 60 folks at the last dance. Music next week will be from Florian Chmielewski.
Bill and Judy Haapoja will be at the Villa Vista 6-7 p.m. Aug. 30.
I recently attended a Safe Driver Course at the Carlton County transportation building. The class was fun and fast-moving and if you go you can get a 10-percent discount on your car insurance. Sign up for the eight-hour class or four-hour refresher by calling 320-308-1400 or go to http://www.driverdiscountprogram.com to take the course online.
That's all the news from the Edge of Wright. Enjoy the fair.
