Judge Robert Macaulay rode his bike to work at the Carlton County Courthouse for the last time Tuesday, Aug. 31. This time he wasn't alone making the trek: nearly 10 co-workers joined him at the Scanlon Park and Ride lot along with several police and sheriff's department cars for the final leg of the ride. With lights swirling, the group made its way down the shoulder of Highway 45 between Scanlon and the courthouse in their helmets and brightly colored clothing. Macaulay was greeted by even more coworkers (past and present) and loved ones outside the courthouse when the group of cyclists arrived.
The veteran judge teared up as he hugged and shook hands with every single one of them people waiting, including his wife, Karen, and their youngest daughter, Olivia (pictured right) before gathering for a group photo outside the courthouse and another chorus of "For he's a jolly good fellow," led by his longtime court recorder Kevin Hamre.
Read much more in next week's Pine Knot News as we sit down with Judge Macaulay and look back on his nearly 40-year legal career, and forward into the next adventure.
