A hometown newspaper with a local office, local owners & lots of local news
Mystery solved, and by a subscriber at that. Del Prevost is the lone male in the two pictures printed last week that we received from the Carlton County Historical Society. He said Cloquet High School students once went to the WKLK radio station to provide a weekly report on what was happening in the Cloquet school system. Various students would go to the station each week, Prevost said. He can be found in the picture at right with fellow senior Sue Mylander Peterson in January of 1968.
The other photo includes, on the far left, Cherylann (Cherie) Boyer Heitke from the Class of 1968. Cherie said the other students are Marion Eklund Adineh and Nancy Chabot Nelson, who was a junior at the time.
Cherie provided some details on the weekly broadcast. "On Saturday mornings, two groups of CHS students selected by (John) Buytaert alternately reported the school news," she said. "We talked about what happened during the week and made sure the listeners were aware of future activities not to miss. Sometimes we even interviewed a student or teacher to get their perspective. We also interspersed current music with 45s donated by Len's Melody Music store in downtown Cloquet and dedicated one song to a teacher or administrator we chose to recognize. It was an honor to be chosen for these two groups of reporters and definitely one of those activities we won't forget."
