History Mystery

Frequent Pine Knot News contributor and award-winning columnist Steve Korby hails from Scanlon, so he knew some of the sixth-graders pictured last week (at right).

"The teacher, who was also the Scanlon principal, is Lydia Henke," he said. "She was my sixth-grade teacher as well. She was a Cloquet Country Club member. I remember how shocked I was to see her having a cocktail in the CCC clubhouse after a round of golf. My teacher!"

Korby said the tall kid in the back is Paul Carlson and the person in front of Paul is John Evenson, who became an artist and graphic artist and designed the first iteration of the current Cloquet Lumberjack logo. "I think Randy Stowell and Terry Branham are in the picture too, but I'm not sure," Korby said.

As often happens with History Mystery items, one thing leads to another. Korby would like to know any origin information on a long-hanging painting at the country club, which is pictured above.

"This mural hung behind the Cloquet Country Club bar for many years. Now it is in the dining room. It is obviously hole No. 6 at CCC with the pond in front and pasture adjacent," he said. "When was it painted and by who? Are the golfers anyone in particular? Is it a true story? Who requested it? Names of the cows?"

Help Korby and others out and send any History Mystery solving clues, on the mural or that sixth-grade picture, by email to [email protected] with "history" in the subject line. Moo.
