A Superior man is facing charges for possession of more than 72 grams of methamphetamine after a traffic stop earlier this month.
Antonio Carlos Boyd, 42, was charged March 3 with first-degree felony drug possession and obstructing the legal process, a misdemeanor, in Sixth District Carlton County Court.
According to the criminal complaint, officers from three agencies — the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, Carlton County Sheriff’s Office and Cloquet Police Department — initiated a traffic stop on a motor vehicle on Interstate 35 in Carlton County with a search warrant in their possession.
The criminal complaint states that Boyd was a passenger and exited the vehicle, allegedly walking towards officers with his hands in his pockets. Because Boyd has a history of federal narcotics and firearms offenses, his actions were cause for concern for officer safety. When Boyd refused to remove his hands from his pockets, officers grabbed his arms and he pulled away and would still not remove his hands from his pockets. After officers gained physical control, the report says, they discovered a black bag containing multiple baggies of suspected controlled substances in his sweatshirt pocket. The substance field-tested positive for the presence of methamphetamine with a weight of 72.2 grams.
Boyd has a significant criminal history in Wisconsin dating back to a felony burglary charge in 1997. Other convictions since then include misdemeanor theft, battery and at least three prior cases of possession of methamphetamine, including two state convictions for arrests in September and November of 2014.
According to a Superior Telegram story, in 2015 Boyd was sentenced in federal court to seven years in prison for possession of methamphetamine with the intent to distribute along with possessing a firearm. He served his state sentences concurrently with the federal sentence, according to Wisconsin criminal records.
Sixth District Carlton County judge Amy Lukasavitz set bail for Boyd at $150,000. His next court appearance is scheduled for March 16.
