Wright/Cromwell news

Last Monday around 10:30 a.m., I noticed my birdfeeders were moved and knocked to the ground. A few minutes later, I noticed they had moved again. I couldn’t figure out what was happening until I looked out around 11 a.m. and saw a beautiful cinnamon-colored black bear eating out of the feeders. It even tore one apart while I was watching. The bear hung around for about a half-hour, enough time for me to get some great photographs from my sliding glass door in the kitchen. Then in the evening when the thunderstorm hit, I was sitting by the glass door watching the storm and suddenly saw a spark up on our light pole, followed by a loud thump. Something had dropped from the pole and hit the ground with a thud. I wasn’t sure what it could be, but then when the sky lit up again, I saw that it was that same bear. It seemed dead, but it was just stunned, and after a few minutes it stood up, shook itself alert and lumbered off into the front yard. I haven’t seen it again, but we no longer have any birdfeeders out either. Such is life in the country.

The ADK sorority just got a check for $500 from Lake Country Power’s Operation Round Up to be used for the Little Red Bookshelf and Tales for Tots. The Bethlehem quilters also got a $500 check for batting, and the Carlton County Retired Educators got a $500 check for cleaning and school supplies to be given out at the Carlton County fair in August. Every year the ADK group cleans the Old Schoolhouse. Volunteers are needed to man the school during school hours. Call me to sign up to help.
