Obituary: Helen "Joyce" Arlene Haugland

Helen “Joyce” Arlene Haugland, 93, of Cloquet passed away May 24, 2022. She was born Jan. 10, 1929, to John and Clara (Sata) Hanson in Pequot Lakes. She graduated from Pequot Lakes High School in 1947. In 1949, she married her high school sweetheart, Gerald “Bud” Haugland, and they celebrated 66 years of marriage before Bud passed away in 2019. They raised three children, John, Jeri Lynn and Joni. After Bud’s service in the U.S. Air Force, they made their home in Brainerd until he was transferred to Claremont, California with his job at the Northwest Paper Company. They returned to Cloquet in 1970. Joyce was a longtime member of Zion Lutheran Church, where she served in many capacities. She was very involved in most of the women’s programs, notably the Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church and its missions,

bible study and discussion groups, and fellowship. Joyce was the “queen of the kitchen,” keeping it clean and orderly on a regular basis for church dinners, quilters’ coffee time and holiday events. Her hobbies included woodworking and garage sales.

Joyce is survived by her three children, John (Debbi) Haugland, Jeri Lynn Wright and Joni (Tim) Aldridge; eight grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren; her youngest sister, Linda (Bill) Mimm of Pequot Lakes; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Gerald Haugland; her parents, John and Clara Hanson; sisters Bernice (Iver) Knutson, Agnes (Emil) Beavers, Marlys (Ken) Nelson and infant sister Anna Bernice; and her son-in-law Charles (Jeri) Wright.

Joyce’s Liturgy of Resurrection and celebration of her life will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 23 at Zion Lutheran Church in Cloquet. The burial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, July 25 at Our Savior’s Cemetery in Pequot Lakes. A luncheon will follow at John and Debbi’s cabin in Backus.
