Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College is welcoming Indigenous-serving educators from across the globe to showcase the college and the local Ojibwe culture from Friday, Aug. 12 through Thursday, Aug. 18.
This year, FDLTCC is the hub of the annual gathering of the World Indigenous Nations Higher Education Consortium.
The school plans to host its international guests and the local community to a series of free events designed to illustrate the significance of the Fond du Lac Reservation and Ojibwe, or Anishinaabe, culture, along with the work done by FDLTCC.
A drum and dance exhibition will kick off the festivities Saturday, Aug. 13 at the Fond du Lac Powwow Grounds located near the baseball field by 49 University Road, Cloquet.
Monday continues with canoe races at Kiwenz Campground on Bobs Drive, Cloquet, followed on Tuesday with Baaga’adowewin (traditional stick lacrosse) at Hilltop Park, across 14th Street from FDLTCC.
The conference wraps up Thursday, Aug. 18 with a cultural exchange event at the Fond du Lac Cultural Center at 1711 Big Lake Road, Cloquet.
All events will run from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. with a lunch provided at noon.
The consortium’s mission focuses primarily on Indigenous education and the educational rights of Indigenous people. The group also strives to protect and enhance spiritual beliefs, cultures, and languages through higher education.
FDLTCC joined the consortium in 2017 and is one of many schools accredited within the World Indigenous Nations University network.
Each network school represents rich and unique cultures native to a wide array of countries including Australia, Canada, Taiwan and Norway.
