Thousands of people descended on Cloquet's Veterans Park on Saturday to enjoy music mixed with prayer and plenty of fun as the Wood City Worship Festival kicked off its eighth event in the past nine years.
Lee Harris, who organizes the annual event as part of the Kingdom Builders Ministry group, was thrilled with the turnout. Although it hadn't quite reached pre-pandemic levels by late Saturday afternoon, he predicted even more people would arrive for headliner Cory Asbury that night.
Harris said the day is an opportunity to worship and enjoy time together for regular churchgoers, but they also aim to make it a fun event "so people who don't know Jesus may get to meet him," he said.
Another goal of the event and the ministry itself – which is not a church, but based out of Common Ground Coffee Bar & Deli in West End Cloquet – is to encourage area churches to work together on something. Mission accomplished.
"We couldn't do it without all the volunteers. They're amazing. That kids' area alone takes a lot and we worked on setup all day yesterday," Harris said.
As he talked, a crowd was dancing and singing to the music of the Trampolines in front of the massive stage. "Jesus, Jesus, Jesus," they rapped.
