Cloquet theater offers $3 movies Saturday

Moviegoers get a treat Saturday, Sept. 3, when Premiere Theaters in Cloquet will offer tickets to all movies, all day for $3.

Premiere confirmed this week that it had joined the National Cinema Day movement adopted on a trial basis by the National Association of Theater Owners.

The $3 tickets coincide with Premiere’s introduction of 369 new recliner seats, which are debuting this weekend.

“It couldn’t be better timing for us,” general manager Adam Stowell said. “We’re excited. We expect it to be busy, and for people to enjoy experiencing the new chairs for the first time.”

In order to drum up business during a down period for new releases, the theater owners group received approval from the film studios to charge a reduced rate. Stowell said it’s possible National Cinema Day could develop into an annual event.

Normally, Premiere offers tickets at $9.50 for adults, with matinee prices dropping to $7.50. Children under 3 are admitted for free, and both children under 15 and seniors are charged $7.50 per ticket all day.

Premiere will be showing a full slate of movies Saturday, including some which are being rereleased for the occasion, including the summer’s biggest blockbuster, “Top Gun: Maverick.”

Other movies playing this weekend include “Minions: The Rise of Gru,” “The Invitation,” “Where the Crawdads Sing,” “Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero,” “DC League of Super-Pets,” and “Spider-Man: No Way Home — The More Fun Stuff Version.”

“Normally, Labor Day weekend is not a real big movie weekend unless it rains,” Stowell said.

The theater began selling advance tickets to the $3 films this week, and moviegoers can now reserve seating with Premiere to ensure they get one of the new recliner seats, which appear in all six auditoriums.

“These chairs are the real deal,” Stowell said. “They’re clearly a step above. The only issue we hear from people is, ‘Will we stay awake for the whole movie?’”
