New production uses humor to tackle inheritance

For its latest production, the County Seat Theater Company dipped into the comedy stylings of Phyllis Diller, Lily Tomlin and Joan Rivers for "Spreading It Around."

Written by Londos D'Arrigo, a hard-hitting comedy writer for the aforementioned celebrities, the play will debut at the Encore! Performing Arts Center in Cloquet beginning this weekend.

Angela Drayton plays Deborah Weckert, a wealthy widow living in an upscale retirement community. She's tired of handing out money to her unappreciative children, so she starts the "S.I.N. Foundation," to give to those truly in need. Short for "spend it now," the foundation terrifies her greedy son, played by Jesse Davis, driving him to devise a plan to have her committed.

The comedy has played numerous theaters in the U.S. and Canada, and continues to spread around its laughs, said a County Seat news release.

"Money is like manure - it doesn't do any good until it is spread around," said director Larry Anderson. "For those of us of a certain age, thoughts of who, what and how our estates may be distributed after we are gone tend to be among many procrastinations."

County Seat will present live performances at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Sept. 23 and 24, and again Sept. 29 and 30. Sunday matinees on Sept. 25 and Oct. 1 and 2 are at 2 p.m.

Tickets can be reserved by calling the box office at 218-878-0071, or online at countyseattheater.com.

During the run of this show, the Encore Art Gallery will feature artist William Wise. William is a watercolor painter, portraitist and teacher from Duluth.

"My passions are painting the face/figure and landscapes to capture and tell a story of the subject or scene," he said in the news release. "I am particularly inspired by and have a love for painting musicians."

The County Seat Theater Company offers a full season of local performances, as well as youth productions, musical acts and has an art gallery featuring work by local artists.
