Obituary: Shelly A. Dubla

Shelly A. Dubla, 59, ended her earthly journey on Thursday, Oct. 20, 2022, at Inter-Faith Care Center in Carlton where she also had been working until May 2. She was born Oct. 23, 1962, in Duluth, the daughter of Stanley and Ruth (Holmberg) Dubla.

Shelly graduated from Proctor High School in 1981 and obtained a paralegal degree from Lake Superior College in 2004. She worked at New Page, numerous fitness centers, was a certified personal trainer and caregiver, and worked at numerous care facilities.

She married Jay Boberg in 1997. They were married for 11 years.

She was active in the Alcoholics Anonymous community and celebrated 32 years of sobriety. Shelly sought out careers where she could help others. She took pride in being healthy and active and enjoyed sharing and teaching that knowledge to others.

Her six-month battle with ALS was physically and mentally debilitating to her, but she still proved how strong she was. Shelly was and will continue to be an inspiration to many.

Shelly was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her siblings, Minnie Dubla, Greg (Tammy) Dubla, and Diana (Don) Hansen; two nephews, Keian and Tyler; one niece, Yvonne; special friend, Holly Johnson; former husband and best friend, Jay Boberg; stepsons, Tim and Nathan Boberg; her boyfriend, Keith Karpen; many other friends; and her special dog, Nickey.

Visitation will be Sunday, Oct. 30 at 1 p.m. until the 2 p.m. memorial service at Nelson Funeral Care, followed by a luncheon. Inurnment will follow at the Canosia Township Cemetery.
