Roy Ralph Maki Sr., 92, lifelong resident of Cloquet, passed away Jan. 14, 2023. Roy was born in Cloquet on March 18, 1930, to Charles and Anna Maki. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of the Korean War. He worked for Diamond Match, had his own business, Maki & Son's Sod, for many years, and retired from Potlatch Corp. in Cloquet. Roy enjoyed working with his hands, motorcycle riding, and fishing. His hobbies included pottery, making chairs from willow branches, crafting cedar-post beds and, most recently, making windmills.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his sons David and Jonathan; and brothers, Allen, Kenneth and Steven. Roy is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Nancy; children Roy "Junior" (Sue) Maki, Daniel (Penny) Maki, Tina (Brett) Gibson and Charles (Ronnie Swenson) Maki; siblings Myrt (Art) Wirtanen, Gert (Wes) Erickson and Sue (Del) Weets; brother-in-law, Steve (Marsha) Hills; sister in-law, Elvera (Allen) Maki; and seven grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.
Visitation: 11 a.m. until the 12 p.m. funeral service Wednesday, Jan. 25 at Atkins-Northland Funeral Home Chapel, 801 14th St., Cloquet. A luncheon will follow the service in the fireside room of the funeral home. Burial will be in Sawyer Cemetery, Sawyer at a later date. Arrangements entrusted to Atkins-Northland Funeral Home.
