While I was in the hospital with hepatitis when I was 14, I was awakened in the middle of the night when they brought in a roommate for me. It just so happened to be a classmate of mine.
She had had an emergency appendectomy and they brought her into my room after the surgery.
While we were in the hospital, the Eisenhower/Nixon campaign train came to town. All of our classmates were out of school to be at the train station when it stopped. We weren’t able to go to that event, but we heard a lot about it from others.
One song that I remember from those days, because it seemed each time I would wake up it
was playing on the radio, was “Walkin’ to Missouri (Poor Little Robin).”
I always thought this was because Truman would be leaving office and returning to Missouri.
