While I was in the hospital with hepatitis when I was 14, I was awakened in the middle of the night when they brought in a roommate for me. It just so happened to be a classmate of mine.

While we were in the hospital, the Eisenhower/Nixon campaign train came to town. All of our classmates were out of school to be at the train station when it stopped. We weren’t able to go to that event, but we heard a lot about it from others.

was playing on the radio, was “Walkin’ to Missouri (Poor Little Robin).”

I always thought this was because Truman would be leaving office and returning to Missouri.
