Kettle River news

Why has the county pulled workers from the county garage in Kettle River when they had promised that they will not close the garage? They claim it is because of the cost of fuel, but the contract for the fuel is the same for Kettle River as it is for Barnum, so how can that be the reason? It takes more fuel for the trucks to come from Barnum to Kettle River than if they leave from the Kettle River garage. Do we have to contact our county commissioners again?

Sympathies to the family of Becky Holt and Kathy Harju.

When I was in high school, my parents belonged to a pinochle club. It consisted of 12 couples and they would meet once a month at one of the couple’s homes and play cards.

When it was time for them to meet at our house, my sisters and I would remind Dad: “It is time for pinochle club and we need new carpet in the living room.” Another time it was, “Dad, it is time for pinochle club and we need new drapes in the living room.” Then another year it was, “Dad, it is time for pinochle club and Mom needs some new dishes.”

With six children, things wore out but, of course, we never did anything about it until it was time for pinochle club at our house. One day Dad jokingly said “We are going to have to quit this pinochle club, it is just getting too expensive.”

Of course, they continued with the club for many years until some of the members had to drop out for various reasons and they didn’t have enough couples to continue. My sisters and I would bake and make coffee each time it was at our house.
