Wilderness roll through Alaska unscathed

For the first time in franchise history last weekend, the Minnesota Wilderness finished an Alaska road swing undefeated, with 6-2 and 4-2 wins over the Anchorage Wolverines on March 10 and 11.

Sawyer Scholl led the way, scoring four goals and adding an assist in the two games.

The Wilderness finished 4-0 in two weeks of play in Alaska, beating Anchorage and the Kenai River Brown Bears twice each to extend Minnesota’s winning streak to five games.

Scholl, 21, is a 6-foot-2, 190-pound native of Green Bay, Wisconsin. He was awarded North American Hockey League Midwest Division Star of the Week for his efforts. It was the second straight week a Wilderness player won the award, joining goalie Isaak Posch.

Scholl has 14 points in 11 games since joining the Wilderness in early February, and is a University of Wisconsin recruit.

“Sawyer had another great weekend for us continuing his strong play since he joined us,” Minnesota coach Brett Skinner said in a team news release. “Not only was he rewarded for his

offensive abilities scoring some big goals, but he also played a strong 200-foot game, playing all situations for us and helping the team to two big wins on the road against a very tough opponent.”

Kevin Marx Norén added two goals on Saturday, raising his team-leading total to 26 goals.

At 28-15-7 and with 63 points, Minnesota is two points back of Midwest Division-leading Wisconsin Windigo (31-16-3).

The Wilderness return home to Northwoods Credit Union Arena in Cloquet for games Friday and Saturday against fifth-place Chippewa Steel (26-21-2), who have recently won four games in a row. Both games start at 7:15 p.m.
