Obituary: Douglas George Halverson

Douglas George Halverson, 72, passed away July 30, 2023, after a brief illness with ALS, surrounded by his family. He was born on Oct. 20, 1950, the son of George and Germaine

Halverson in Coniston, Ontario. Doug graduated from Michigan Technological University with a degree in metallurgical engineering in 1973. He was united in marriage to Toni Lee Dal Santo on July 27, 1974. His career in metallurgy brought him and his family to Minnesota in 1976, and during his career he worked for Hanna Mining, U.S. Steel, National Lime and Stone, U.S. Silica, and, finally, Magotteaux until retiring in 2018.

Doug enjoyed watching his kids and grandkids in their sports, and he loved the game of hockey. He also enjoyed camping with his friends and family at Bent Trout Lake Campground. Doug and Toni traveled to many states and provinces, and traveled to Europe with special friends Mike and Glenn Snesrud. He enjoyed everything that had to do with family, and he was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. Doug will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

Doug was preceded in death by his parents; his in-laws; one brother, Wayne Halverson; and a sister-in-law, Mary Ellen Keist. He will be deeply missed by his wife of 49 years, Toni; daughter, Tracy (Paul) Ganter; sons, Jamie (Billie Jo) and Brent (Melissa) Halverson; grandchildren, Callie (Brandon) Bassett, Jaxie, Frankie, Jamis, Easton, Weston and Brayden; great-granddaughters,

Eilee, Oaklee and Blayke; his sister, Suzanne Royer; brother, Gary (Fran) Halverson; brothers-in-law, Pete (Annette) Dal Santo and Jim (Deb) Dal Santo; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends who were like family. The family would like to express their thanks and gratitude to the Cloquet paramedics and St. Luke's staff for the excellent care given to Doug.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the ALS Research Foundation. A memorial service was scheduled for 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 3 at Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Cloquet. Arrangements are entrusted to Nelson Funeral Care in Cloquet.
