While I was attending nursing school, my classmate Carol and I would usually have lunch together. I would always give her the tomato from my salad. She finally asked if I didn’t like tomatoes. I told her I liked them, but not the ones we got on our salad. She was born and raised in Chicago and had never eaten a tomato right off the vine. So, one weekend during the summer, she went home with me. I took her out to the garden and picked a nice warm, ripe tomato off the vine and gave it to her. She took one bite and was amazed.

“No wonder you always gave me your tomato,” she said. “I have never tasted a tomato as good as this.”
