Girls wanted to start a Scout troop; campout offered

Any girls interested in finding out more about joining a Scout BSA troop — formerly known as the Boy Scouts — can get a taste of a typical event by joining in a campout at Pine Valley on Friday, Oct. 6.

Scoutmaster Jason Mangan said they are trying to start a girls troop. Troop activities are focused on camping and the outdoors, community service and similar activities.

It’s a great opportunity for kids to learn to be self-reliant, and learn outdoor skills, some leadership skills and have a good time,” he said.

His wife, Jenn Mangan, would be a leader.

“On paper they have to be separate, but you can have linked troops that do activities and meetings together,” Jason said, explaining that there are also separations built in to keep everyone safe.

To ask questions or register, call or text Jason Mangan at 218-206-5535 by noon Thursday. Overnight guests must register so the troop can plan for enough tents, equipment, and adult supervision.

Interested but not ready for a sleepover? No problem. Stop by Pine Valley anytime after 9 a.m. Saturday and look for Scouts and others working on a community service project near the chalet most of the day.

“It’s a good opportunity to see what we do and get some information,” Mangan said.
