The Cloquet boys cross country team dazzled Tuesday at the Lake Superior Conference championships at Grand View golf course in Duluth. The Lumberjack boys varsity team took home the trophy, winning the meet with 40 points.
Ninth-grader Evan Rothamel led the Cloquet boys team, winning the 5-kilometer race with a time of 18 minutes, 27 seconds. In the three-lap course, Rothamel took the lead in the first lap. He built on his lead with each lap and finished 21 seconds ahead of second-place finisher Brenden Sylvester from Grand Rapids.
The Lumberjacks had five runners earn all-conference honors, placing in the top 14. Following Rothamel, sophomore Andrew Shepherd placed fourth while his classmate Ethan Lavan placed eighth. Junior Ian Berube finished 13th, and senior Calvin Snesrud finished 14th.
Plagued by illness and injury, the Lumberjacks girls team had a respectable showing, placing fifth. The girls top runner, senior Alexa Shepherd, finished in 25th place. Her teammates were close behind with sophomore Bri LaCore placing 26th, senior Victoria Nelson 27th, and freshman Alli Weix finishing in 28th place.
The Lumberjacks head to Proctor, Tuesday, Oct. 17 for the final regular-season race before the Section 7AA meet Oct. 26 in Hibbing.
