Shirley L. (Waydula) Smith, 84, of Cloquet passed away Oct. 4, 2023, at Twin Ports Health Services in Superior, Wisconsin. Shirley was born on Sept. 20, 1939, in Shovel Lake, Minnesota to Peter and Ina (Hunter) Waydula. Shirley attended Greenway High School in Coleraine until meeting, and marrying the love of her life, Dale Smith, on Jan. 28, 1956. Together they worked in the bakery business in a few states, until eventually owning and operating Ed's Bakery in Cloquet for 18 years. Shirley would continue working at the bakery until retiring in 2002.
Shirley loved dancing, gardening, cooking and baking, snowmobiling, camping, and having family and friends over for pig roasts at their home on Big Lake. She was most proud of her four boys and the life that she and Dale made for themselves through hard work and determination. She will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Shirley was preceded in death by her husband, Dale Smith; parents; sisters Irene Weller and Darlene Deming; and infant son, Mark.
She is survived by her brother, Bill (Marge) Waydula; sisters Lucille Walsh and Lavonne Cook; sons, Lonnie (Cathy) Smith Sr., Dennis (Deb) Smith, Randy Smith and Corey (Terri) Smith; grandchildren, Corinna Smith, Jessica Nordby and Heather (Derek) Bartz, Lonnie Smith Jr., Brandi Smith, Vanessa (Andy) Knewtson, Desiree Garibay, Daniel (April) Myers, and Steven and Jessica Myers; 17 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Shirley's wish was to have a gathering of family and friends in lieu of memorial services. Information about the gathering will be mailed. Cremation services were provided by Atkins Northland Funeral Home, Cloquet.
