Roy Lewis Jerde passed away at home on Oct. 30, 2023, at the age of 83. Roy was born on Sept. 23, 1940, in Madison, Minnesota, to Herbert and Eleanor Jerde.
Roy moved to Cloquet in 1955 and graduated from Cloquet High School in 1958. After graduation he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving 1958 through 1961. He married the love of his life, Judith Ann Jerde, on July 27, 1963, and they made their home in Esko. Roy was a meat cutter by trade. He ran many meat departments throughout his life, including Jerde’s Butcher Shop from 1978 to 2002. He was also a licensed auctioneer who conducted multiple auctions throughout the area, eventually teaming up with Auctions by Norby. Roy loved horses. He bought, sold, bred and raised many quarter horses.
Roy was preceded in death by his parents, Herbert Jerde and Eleanor Jerde-Jania; his wife of 46 years, Judith Ann Jerde; two brothers, Jerry and Arnold; his in-laws, Frank and Leona Krocka; brothers in-law, Rodger Krocka of Texas, Michael Krocka of Duluth, Wayne Teachworth of Duluth, Gordon Doble of Cloquet and Wendell Goad of Carlton; and special companion Betty Kubis.
Roy is survived by his three children, Robert (Darcy), Cheryl (Curt) and Kenny “Butch,” seven grandchildren, Austin, Morgan, Logan, Nicholas, Haylie, Brittney and Danielle, and two great-grandchildren, Aspen and Alexis; two sisters, Betty Doble and Ruthanne “Babe” Goad; and his horse, Joe, whom Roy had for 27 years.
Visitation: 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. Celebration of Life service on Wednesday, Nov. 15 in Atkins Northland Funeral Home, 801 14th St., Cloquet.
