Joyce Arlene Suominen Layon, 85, of Kettle River died peacefully on Dec. 10, 2023, in The North Shore Estates in Duluth. She was born on June 20, 1938, in Cloquet to Leo and Sylvia Suominen. Joyce grew up in the Esko and Cloquet area, where she attended school. She later worked at the paper mill in Cloquet, where she met Lloyd Layon. On April 4, 1959, Joyce married Lloyd in Minneapolis. They lived in the Twin Cities area for a short time and Joyce worked as an elevator operator at the Foshay Tower. They later moved to Kettle River.
Joyce worked as the produce manager at Holiday in Moose Lake. She was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Kettle River, where she was active in its Mission Guild and was very involved in quilting.
She was an excellent cook, liked baking, and loved to read. Joyce enjoyed nature by picking agates and watching birds and wildlife.
She will be fondly remembered as a nice pleasant lady, especially by her nieces and nephews whom she always took time to play with while they were growing up.
Joyce will be lovingly remembered by her husband, Lloyd; two children, Gene (Kathy) Layon and Sandy (Randy) Gram; eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; and numerous other relatives and friends. A special thank-you to the Korhonen family who always helped and supported their neighbors through the years and allowed them to remain in their home as long as they could.
Visitation: Noon until the 1 p.m. service Friday, Dec. 15 in Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Kettle River. Burial will be in Holy Trinity Lutheran Cemetery, Kettle River.
