Obituary: Alice Marguerite Holm

Alice M. Holm, 83, of Cloquet passed away Feb. 9, 2024, at Community Memorial Hospital. She was born April 22, 1940, in Marshall, the daughter of Albin and Katherine (Yost) Nelson. Alice graduated from Ivanhoe High School, in Ivanhoe, Minnesota in 1957; Gustavus Adolphus College, in St. Peter in 1961 with a biology major; Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, Ohio, with a master's in molecular biology; and the University of Minnesota in Crookston with an associate degree in early childhood education.

Alice married Paul L. Holm on June 14, 1963, at Bethany Lutheran Church in Arco, Minnesota. Alice was a biology teacher in Bettendorf, Iowa, and a Tupperware and Home Imports home sales dealer; provided childcare in her home; worked with South Dakota State University, Station Biochemistry; was an early childhood parent educator; worked at the Polk County Developmental Achievement Center; and was a clerk at Munn's Jewelers and the Willow and Ivy gift shop.

She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and Chapter EM P.E.O. Alice also enjoyed choral singing (she sang in the choir in every church she attended), creating wood crafts that she sold at area craft shows, tending her garden at home, organization of the community garden at Zion Lutheran Church, cooking (especially new recipes - eating her cooking was always an adventure because the printed recipe was always modified by using ingredients that were available when the required ones were not readily available in the pantry), reading and being part of book study groups, working with the Zion quilting group, and participating in Bible study at Zion. Her greatest joy centered around her daughters, grandchildren, nephews and nieces and their children, her friends, and her husband.

Alice was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Mary Jensen. She is survived by her husband, Paul; daughters, Katherine Setterlund and Karin (Todd) Cortese; grandchildren, Erika Cortese, Lindsay Cortese, Ella Castillo, Megan Setterlund and Joseph Setterlund.

Visitation: 12 p.m. until the 1 p.m. memorial service Saturday, Feb. 17 at Zion Lutheran Church in Cloquet, followed by coffee and refreshments in the church social hall. In lieu of flowers, memorials to Zion Lutheran Church, Chapter EM P.E.O., and Gustavus Adolphus College are preferred. Arrangements are entrusted to Nelson Funeral Care.
