Shirley Ann Grover, 85, of Carlton passed away March 20, 2024, at St. Luke's Hospital in Duluth. Shirley was born Aug. 15, 1938, in Moose Lake, the daughter of Clarence "Kelly" and Ruth (Olson) Paulson. Shirley graduated from Carlton High School and attended the Humboldt Institute of Minneapolis. She worked as a secretary at the Potlatch Corp. until she married her high school sweetheart, Dale R. Grover, in 1957. Shirley was a proud Avon representative for 34 years, and worked briefly at Wal-Mart in Cloquet in the garden center later in her career. Shirley was a member of Elim Lutheran Church in Blackhoof Township.
Shirley would share, "Baking is my favorite." There was always a pan of her famous chocolate brownies or pumpkin bars available to all who visited. But in fact, she was a wonderful cook and an experienced green thumb, and enjoyed watching the hummingbirds grace many feeders outside of their home. When Shirley attended the Blackhoof Valley School as a child, she was dropped off and picked up on a sled during the winter months by the family dog. Shirley was an animal lover and had a special connection to dogs. Littleone, Ghost and Bandit were especially beloved.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents; an infant sister, Alice; two brothers, Gene and Ralph Paulson; and one grandson, Shan Grover. She is survived by her husband, Dale; four sons, Bruce (Mary) Grover, Brian (Sue) Grover, Mike Grover, and Dave (Cathy) Grover; one brother, Dan Paulson; nine grandchildren, Christine, Adrienne (Chris), Emma, Tara (John), Nitasha (Jim), Dustin, Robin (Flavia), Angie (Rick), and Ryan; 11 great-grandchildren, Makaila, Haley, Ameila, Gabriella, Gracie, Aurora, Lucca, Brodie (Maddie), Breanne, Devan and McKenzie; and numerous nieces and nephews.
