The 2024 Lake Superior Conference was held Tuesday afternoon in Cloquet under blue skies and sunshine, with a bit of an east wind. When the day came to an end, the Cloquet Lumberjacks nabbed first place in the boys meet while the Cloquet girls took second place at the brand-new Members Cooperative Credit Union athletic complex.
The Cloquet boys placed first with 152.5 points. Proctor was second with 135 points and Grand Rapids was third in the eight-team field.
Hibbing captured top honors for the girls meet with a total of 145 points; Cloquet was second with 141.5, and Proctor finished third in a field of eight teams.
"We came into the season with both the boys and girls being very inexperienced," said Cloquet coach Tim Prosen. "As a group, both teams have improved more than any other year from where they started, and they are still young."
Makenzie Lynch had a big day for the Cloquet girls by taking first in the 300-meter hurdles and second place in both the triple jump and long jump. Ava Luiten was first for Cloquet in the discus, and Kira Suominen was first in the triple jump for the 'Jacks. Suominen also added a pair of third-place finishes to score big for the 'Jacks.
The Cloquet boys got first-place finishes from Andrew Shepherd in the 800-meter run, with Ian Berube in the 1,600-meter run and Elijah Aultman in the triple jump.
"We don't have many kids who will just go out and get us a bunch of points this year," Prosen said. "What we have is a lot of kids who can go out and get us two or three points, and that shows our depth with a very young group. We have so many kids contributing points, it just makes it so enjoyable to watch them grow."
Last week the Lumberjacks boys team took top honors in the Section 7 True Team meet and will participate this Saturday in the True Team state meet in Stillwater. The regular Section 7 meet will be held Wednesday, May 29 and Saturday, June 1 at the Members Cooperative Athletic Complex in Cloquet again.
"The layout for track at our new facility is amazing," said Prosen. "It just turned out beautifully, and we have had nothing but compliments from everyone."
