George Louis Henschel, 85, passed away Jan. 15, 2024, at his home in Gilbert, Minnesota. He was born to George and Lottie (Gallup) Henschel on Feb. 11, 1939, in Duluth.
George loved life, his family and his canine family members. He loved old cars, motorcycles, snowmobiles, boats, camping and trailering with his RV and fifth wheels to Texas, Arizona and Nevada. He wanted to see many places and to experience many new adventures throughout his life.
You could see George throughout the years in parades with his convertibles, giving rides to princesses and queens for different events. He did this for 20-plus years, and was very proud and honored to be asked to do it.
George was a hard worker all his life. He worked at U.S. Steel and the Erie Mining Co./LTV Steel Corp. until he retired. While working at the mines, he also started his own business, GEO Heating and Plumbing, which was very successful, until he again retired at the age of 72. He still continued to help people when he was asked and able. For a number of years, he also owned and operated the GEO Saloon in Biwabik.
George loved music, dancing and rollerskating, and he especially loved people. He was always on the go, and just had to be busy doing things. He was a real jokester too, and loved getting one over on you.
George was loved, and will be missed by the many people who knew him.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Lorraine Trumble and Claudia Johnson; and grandchild, Clarence (Hipple) Forkner.
George is survived by his brother, Harold Henschel; sister, Edith Bradley; his children, Martin Henschel, Kurt (Kim) Henschel, Melissa (Damian) Forkner, Cindy Ranier, Phillip (Laurie) Johnson, Gerald (Michelle) Johnson and Gary Johnson; 15 grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A celebration of life will be held 1-4 p.m. Saturday, June 8 at the Cloquet VFW, 210 Arch St., in Cloquet.
