Elvie Marie Latvala, 91, of Cromwell passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 5, 2024. She was born at home on September 21, 1932, to Carl and Alvina Maijala of Tamarack, Minnesota.
Elvie attended the Patrick School in Clark township (a.k.a. the Red Brick School) and McGregor High School. She married Lauri Latvala on March 31, 1949, and was a traditional homemaker for a number of years. She graduated from the American School of Correspondence in 1962 and from the University of Wisconsin, Superior in 1982. Elvie's career included various administrative and executive assistant positions in both Wisconsin and Arizona.
Elvie was a caring woman with a heart for refugees abroad, neighbors in need, pet dogs, and even stray cats. She was a charter member of the Superior, Wisconsin chapter of NAMI, the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill. Possessed of strong faith, she taught Good News Club in her home for a number of years.
Elvie enjoyed a number of activities: playing the piano, gardening, sewing, and painting (oil, watercolor and acrylic). A lifelong learner, she read extensively – especially history and biographies (no fiction, please!).
She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Helen Latvala; husband, Lauri Latvala; son, Russell Latvala; grandsons, Robert Latvala and Kyle Knudson.
Elvie is survived by daughters, Marilynn (Howard) Plucar of Plymouth, Minnesota, Candy (Don) Knudson of Tamarack, Minnesota; sons, Randy (Chris) Latvala of Hibbing, Minnesota, Roland (Debbie) Latvala of Chandler, Arizona; 13 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be at 11:00 a.m. followed by the Funeral Service at noon on Tuesday, June 11, 2024 in Atkins Northland Funeral Home, 801 14th St, Cloquet, Minnesota. Interment will be at 3:20 p.m. at Salo Cemetery in Tamarack. Arrangements entrusted to Atkins Northland Funeral Home, Cloquet.
