A hometown newspaper with a local office, local owners & lots of local news
The Mahtowa Tavern is located in the heart of Mahtowa, and is well-loved by many! After more than 30 years, Rob finally got to retire, and passed the torch to Glenn and Renee Gaffney March 1. Glenn and Renee continue to dedicate their lives to serving the community, maintaining old-fashioned traditions, and providing great food and fun for everyone.
Glenn and Renee also own TJ's Country Corner, the perfect source of the freshest burger possible for the Mahtowa Tavern. They grind fresh lean beef daily and form hamburger patties by hand for a variety of fantastic half-pound (yes, half a pound!) burgers. Folks are loving the now-famous Mahtowa Mac Mondays with free pool 6-9 p.m., Slider Tuesdays, Cash Drawing Thursdays, and Meat Raffle Fridays. Food specials vary on other days of the week to keep things hopping, and their amazing team works hard to keep the fun flowing! As they get things rolling into summertime, there are lots of great plans to expand the food and entertainment while keeping the history and community values front and center.
One of the biggest events in Mahtowa is the Rat Rod Rendezvous on Labor Day weekend. This year's Rendezvous includes beverages created especially for all the car-loving folks out there. Rat Rod Rusty Ale started years ago, but the original company went out of business. After searching for a couple of years for a company that understood the enthusiasm for keeping the brew alive, they found Bent Brewstillery, the first microbrewery and microdistillery in the state of Minnesota, which creates tasty brews and powerful booze with clever names and flavors! Not only did Bent Brewstillery get the Rat Rod Rusty Ale back, they also created a Rat Rod Rusty Rye Whiskey - what a delicious win!
The Mahtowa Tavern is hosting a Rat Rod patio party 2-6 p.m. Saturday, June 29. Bent Brewstillery will be on hand with samples of Rat Rod Rusty Rye Whiskey and Rat Rod Rusty Ale.
There will be free giveaways throughout the day of a gathering of Rat Rods, live music, a cornhole competition and food and drink specials at the Tavern.
Cheers!
