Obituary: Janet Ann Adkins

Janet Ann Adkins, nee DeCaigny, 68, of Barnum and Sebring, Florida, passed away peacefully and unexpectedly in her sleep at her winter home in Florida on May 16, 2024. Janet was born on Dec. 13, 1955, in Duluth to George DeCaigny and June Galatz.

She is survived by her loving husband, William; her children, Jefferey (Heather) Adkins and John (Tara) Adkins; her grandchildren, Danielle, Dillon, Haley and Amelia; her sister Cindy (Jon) Ketola; and brothers-in-law, Steve (Joyce) Tierney and Donald (Elaine) Adkins; and sister-in-law, Susie (Bruce) Pylka. Janet was preceded in death by her parents; stepfather, Nick Galatz; sisters Linda and Julie, and brothers, Larry and Greg.

Janet was known for her kindness, generosity and dedication to her family and community. She was a community nutrition educator at the University of Minnesota. She also worked as a waitress for her stepfather for many years, and at the Junction Oasis in Carlton. She volunteered extensively with various agencies in Carlton County, was a foster parent for many years and worked at Kids Corner Daycare in Cloquet. She also served many individuals with special needs.

Janet was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church in Carlton. She enjoyed gardening and baking (especially her famous Christmas cookies), and was known for her exceptional stain removal skills.

Visitation: 11 a.m. until the noon celebration of life Saturday, June 29 at Nelson Funeral Care in Cloquet. A lunch will follow.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Special Olympics, an organization Janet felt strongly about, or to your favorite charity in Janet’s name.
