Shirley Berg passed away on July 11, 2024. She was born May 27, 1937 in Minneapolis, Minnesota to Verner and Helen Walters. She lived in Cloquet, Minnesota, all her life, traveling to Bella Vista, Arizona, and Mercedes, Texas for some time during the winter months.
She graduated from Cloquet High School in 1955, attended St. Cloud University and graduated with her teaching certificate, and married her high school sweetheart, Harry, in 1962.
Shirley is survived by her husband, Harry; her son Andy (Jackie) Berg; daughters, Kris (David Haley) Berg, and Jodi (Scott) Patten; grandchildren, Amber (Dustin) Soukkala, Katie (Brandon Small) Bloom, A.J. Berg, Derek Bloom, and Karson Patten; sister, Sheila Wilkinson; brother, Craig Walters; two step-grandchildren, Matt (Nicole) Moretto, and Crystal (Jesse Bryant) Randa; two great step-grandchildren, Eleanor Moretto, and Fallon Bryant; numerous nieces and nephews; and brother-in-law, Morry (Lauren) Berg.
Shirley is preceded in death by her parents, and brother LeRoy Walters.
She absolutely adored her grandchildren, loved to follow them in anything they set their minds to, but especially their sporting activities. She rarely missed their games or events, and if she did miss them she wanted to hear all about them. She especially loved women’s college basketball and volleyball, her favorite team was the Gophers. You could find her watching the recorded games possibly at midnight of the night they played because she was “too busy” to watch them during their live time. She would also not like for anyone to call or tell her who won the game before she had a chance to watch it.
She was a member of the Big Lake Golf Club for years, while having cabins on Torchlight Lake and Big Lake, and then at Cloquet Country Club.
Special Thank You to the nurses and staff at Cloquet Community Memorial Hospital, and Dr. Bjerk and Kim Salo from Essentia Health.
A celebration of life will be held at Big Lake Golf Course, 4-7 p.m. Sunday, July 21.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Cloquet Education Foundation at 302 14th Street, Cloquet, Minnesota, in her name. Arrangements entrusted to Atkins-Northland Funeral Home, 801 14th Street, Cloquet. To sign the guest book and leave an online tribute, see http://www.atkinsnorthlandfuneralhome.com.
