Ma & Pa Kettle Days is this Friday and Saturday, Aug. 9 and 10. The steak fry is at 5 p.m. Friday at the Kettle River Senior Center. Takeout is available. Saturday events at the Kettle River Senior Center start with a pancake breakfast at 8 a.m., followed by the pie social from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., and bingo 3-4 p.m. The midway with food vendors and other vendors is along Minnesota Highway 73. The mud bog will begin at 1 p.m. at the mud bog pit.

The bookmobile visits Kettle River, on Main Street, 1:30-2:15 p.m. Monday, Aug. 26 and Sept. 16.

When my granddaughter was about 8, she and her 2-year-old brother were staying with me for the day. She asked if I knew how to make pie. So I showed her how to make the dough. I gave my grandson a small amount of dough, some flour, and a small rolling pin to keep him occupied while I was helping her with rolling out the dough and putting it into the pie pan. About a week later, she called me and said she and her cousin were making cookies and the recipe said to mix the flour and shortening as one does for pie dough.

She was so excited because she knew what to do.
