Obituary: Betty Carlson

Betty Gayle Carlson, 89, of Mahtowa died peacefully on July 29, 2024, in Moose Lake Village. She was born on April 11, 1935, in Duluth to Barney and Audrey Petersen. Betty grew up in Duluth and graduated from Central High School. On May 21, 1955, Betty married James Carlson in Duluth; they lived in Mahtowa. Betty was a sales consultant for Avon and Princess House, and also worked at Diamond Tool and Horseshoe in Duluth until the company closed. Betty farmed, raised goats, enjoyed time with family and friends at the cabin in Wisconsin, and wintered for many years in Florida. She was a member of Salem Lutheran Church, was active in the Carlton County Historical Society, and ran the Little Log Building at the Carlton County fairgrounds. Betty was extremely proud of graduating from Fond du Lac Community College and held the college and Native community near and dear to her heart.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James; parents, Barney and Audrey Petersen; and her son, Edwin Carlson.

Betty will be lovingly remembered by her three daughters, Jody (David) Eller, Kelly (special friend, Don) Borglund, and Rebecca (Jim) Benson; six grandchildren, Jessica, Fawn, Brookman, Holly Jo, Matthew and Kylea; 11 great-grandchildren; daughter-in-law, Lori Carlson; two sisters, Patricia Shatto and Victoria (Buzz) DeLaRosby; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

Gathering of Family and Friends: 10 a.m. until the noon Celebration of Life on Thursday, Aug. 15 in Salem Lutheran Church, Mahtowa. A luncheon will follow the service. Private inurnment will be in Mount Salem Cemetery, Mahtowa.
