Carlton County has been recognized by the U.S. Department of Agriculture Food and Nutrition Service for its Women, Infants and Children breastfeeding program. Carlton County WIC is one of three WIC agencies in the state to receive the high-level award.
The Breastfeeding Award of Excellence recognizes local WIC agencies that support breastfeeding goals through “exemplary breastfeeding promotion and support activities and serve as models for other local agencies to strengthen breastfeeding among WIC participants,” a press release from the county stated.
Federal officials will visit Minnesota to present the awards and the state’s WIC program will be featured at the Minnesota state fair that began this week.
The award program seeks to highlight models and motivate other local agencies to strengthen their breastfeeding promotion and support activities, and ultimately increase breastfeeding initiation and duration rates among WIC participants.
The award is given at three levels of performance that build on one another: gold, premiere, and elite. Carlton County received a premiere award.
The Minnesota WIC program is one of 15 statewide programs to receive a national award from the federal agency and will receive an additional $168,957 to enhance breastfeeding services for participants in the next year.
