ATV crash injures one; airlift required

A 70-year-old rural Carlton County man was flown by helicopter to a Duluth area hospital Tuesday evening after an ATV crash west of Mahtowa.

According to a news release from the Carlton County Sheriff's Office, the man lost control of the ATV while exiting a gravel driveway on the 2500 block of County Road 4 just before 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 27. The ATV ended up on top of the driver, who sustained significant injuries. Medical personnel determined he should be flown to the hospital. Steve Schulstrom, a neighbor, told the Pine Knot News that at least three ambulances were on scene, and the roadway blocked for nearly an hour. The air ambulance was on the ground for about 40 minutes, they said.

The driver was not wearing a helmet and there were no passengers. Alcohol was not a factor, according to the news release. The Sheriff's Office was assisted by Mahtowa, Blackhoof and Carlton fire departments, Carlton Ambulance and Cloquet Area Fire District ambulance, along with Life Link.
