Obituary: Marlys Anderson

Marlys Marie (Ojibway) Anderson, 95, lifetime resident of Cloquet, passed away peacefully to be with Jesus on Aug. 22, 2024. Her son, Tom, was by her side.

She was born Oct. 19, 1928, to Wilfred and Marcelline (Bassett) Ojibway. Marlys attended Our Lady of the Sacred Heart parochial school and graduated with the Cloquet High School class of 1947.

She was married to Stuart Anderson on Jan. 26, 1950, until his death in February of 1981. Together they had three children, Pam, Nancy and Tom.

Marlys worked 40-plus years at the Diamond Brands company. She was a lifetime member of Queen of Peace Catholic Church. She was a member of the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa.

Marlys always enjoyed visits from her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, especially when they could spend time outside. She also loved her coffee time with Janet and Mary. Visitors were often treated to her delicious zucchini and banana bread.

Marlys was a wonderful embroiderer for many years, and spent hours working on word searches or watching TV, including the Minnesota Twins and Vikings games. She enjoyed her little house and the company of her precious spoiled dog, Harley.

Marlys is survived by her son, Tom (Laurel) Anderson of Carlton; daughter Nancy (Dan Chapinski) Tobolaski of Cloquet; grandchildren Chad Stoinski of Alexandria, Tammi Stoinski of Cloquet, Angela (John) Sundquist of Chisholm, Natalie (Jon) Pollema of Milaca, Tennille (Heath) Hansen of Cloquet, and Tom (Nyree) Anderson Jr. of McGregor; great-grandchildren, Molly, Emma and Andrew Sundquist, Levi and Josiah Pollema, Kirsten Oslin, Kaylee Prisk, Wyatt and Ethan Hansen, and Colten and Steve Anderson; bonus great-granddaughters, Ellarie and Lennen Reigstad; sisters-in-law, Bev Colby and Mary Ojibway; many nieces and nephews; goddaughter, Marla Karow; special friend and roommate, Dagmar Heikkila; longtime friend and pen pal, Sandy Olson; and many other special people throughout her long life.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Stuart Anderson; daughter Pam Anderson; granddaughter Tara Tobolaski; son-in-law Philip Tobolaski; parents, Wilfred and Marcelline (Basset) Ojibway; siblings, John Ojibway, Raymona Hilton and Winifred Kauppi.

Her family thanks all the doctors, nurses and caregivers at FDL Assisted Living, Inter-Faith Care Center and St. Croix Hospice, who all provided Marlys such wonderful care, including her regular aides, Amy, Sara, Kimberly, Kara and Lori. The family also thanks Nelson Funeral Care for helping provide arrangements.

Services for Marlys were held on Wednesday, Aug. 2 at Nelson Funeral Care in Cloquet. Interment was at New Calvary Cemetery in Cloquet.
